VISUAL THINKING

STRATEGIES

atlanta art guide / round one

FEBRUARY 2021

The following guide will lead you through thinking and discussion around art using Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS). This is a method used primarily in classrooms and museum settings, but it can be used in any setting in which there is visual content to be interpreted. VTS is presented here virtually in hopes to educate the viewer on the methodology and encourage the viewing of these selected works in person. All featured work is by Black artists, and all physical work is on display within 10 miles of each other in Atlanta, GA.

WHAT IS VTS?

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a method used primarily in classrooms and museum settings to lead thinking and discussion around visual content. Use VTS as a tool to help you think deeply about the art using these 3 questions:

WHAT MAKES YOU SAY THAT?

ABOUT THE ART

"These works speak to [a Black womxn's] relationship with hair, one showcasing its potential for freedom and the other reflecting its susceptibility to manipulation and restriction."
